Greek Salad #101

P1040844 Greek Salad #101

Summer is upon us and it makes me think of times I have spent in the Greek islands downing daily doses of Horiatiki or what we like to call Greek Salad.  In fact, I ate it so frequently that I kept a running tab in my journal as to how many Greek Salads I consumed.  In ten days, I downed fifteen, clearly I doubled up.  A few things that I have learned about this salad: don’t use lettuce, slice your onions paper thin (they get too spicy otherwise), and let it sit for a bit before you eat it.  I found super sweet grape tomatoes at the market and knew that it was time to make my favorite summer snack.

Can’t forget to give Petrie a cucumber.

Greek Salad

1 pint of sweet grape tomatoes (or any other kind really)
4 Persian cucumbers
1/2 medium red onion (sliced very thin, I like to use my Benriner mandolin)
2 tbs capers
7 oz feta cheese
1/2 cup of good olive oil
2 tbs sherry or jerez vinegar
pinch of dried oregano
salt and pepper to taste

Chop it up, pour the vinegar and olive oil on top, mix, let stand about 20 minutes then EAT.  In Greece, they keep the feta as a big block and place in top and sprinkle it with oregano to serve.

Our last night in NYC, M and I went on a to dinner in Midtown for some fresh seafood.  I think that Saturday felt like 102 degrees and it was so stifling that even this breezy white dress felt like a hot towel.  No matter, I will wear this thing all summer long.

Hamptons Wedding Weekend

We just got back from an epic wedding weekend in East Hampton, it kind of feels that the word “epic” is used quite often for your best friends’ weddings but in this case there really is no other word to describe it.  M & D got married at the groom’s family home in East Hampton under a blue spruce tree that his parents planted at their own wedding on the property that used to stand at only 5 feet tall.  Some of my favorite details of the weekend were:

Cladaugh Hamptons Wedding Weekendmonogrammed details everywhere which they designed themselves based off the irish claddaugh.

Flasks Hamptons Wedding Weekend

the bride had flasks made for all her groom’s best friends.  each had its own personalized touch.

Orchids Hamptons Wedding Weekend White orchids strung from the spruce tree.

butterflies were released during the ceremony.  and one particularly sleepy one ended up on Grandma’s nose.

the tennis court was transformed into a ballroom thanks to a tent with chandeliers. and of course the bride stunned in monique lhuillier.

Hot Tub Hamptons Wedding Weekend

the late night pool party. I believe we set a record in filling that little hot tub.

Happy Summer!

Today is the Summer Solstice which is the official start of the season.  I woke up today to a pavement melting heat in Manhattan and luckily we were heading out to the Hamptons for a wedding extravaganza.  Very excited for this summer, I feel motivated to get out there and do some fun stuff.  Some highlights from last summer:photo 19 Happy Summer!

Outdoor Dogs

Surfing Dog Outdoor Dogs

The Purina Incredible Dog Challenge was held in San Diego last weekend and one of the highlights of the event is the Surfing Dog Contest in Ocean Beach! Check out this 7-year old English Bulldog absolutely shredding it. How fun would it be to have a dog that could surf? My dog needs a life vest and looks like a ragged little rat every time she goes near the water. Oh well, one can dream.

Summer is a good time to take the pooch on road trips and adventures.  I’ve got a bag of random things for our little monster that includes:

A life jacket.  This handle is quite convenient for pulling the doggy out of the water!

Orange Nite Ize Light Up Dog Collar Outdoor Dogs

A LED Dog Collar. Yes, I know this is silly. But if you like to hike or walk at night you have to get this thing.  It’s also easy to spot at dusk because it is bright orange.

 Outdoor Dogs

Ok I’m getting weird on you now.  This is not some kind of torture device, it is the Buddy System : a hands free dog leash.  I discovered it back in 2008 when I was trying to find a better solution for running with Petrie along the Hudson River.  I stumbled upon this article in the NY Times and since it was the cheapest option I decided to give it a go.  I have to say that I use this thing almost everyday for running or hiking and although simple, it’s genius.

Sometimes we’ll take our dog Petrie on LONG hikes: 8 miles and up.  We put this Kool Collar on her when we go to Inyo National Forest and take her 10 miles at altitude.  It’s also good for any dog that easily overheats or in the car. You can either fill it with ice cubes or use the frozen gel pack for longer trips.
